As Ketanji Brown Jackson begins to serve her 1st term the summer of 2022 as the first black woman to ever become a US Supreme Court Justice, it was imperative I created an abstract painting that expresses how far we have come as a country. Every century, the fight continues for equality. Each geometric shape portrays a specific century in which African Americans had to fight for freedom, equality, and justice. The crafted collage images represents some historical figures while some simply state a bold phrase. The multiple shades of brown paint depicts the melanin in African Americans while the drips indicate the proud tears of joy that we have made it this far. 

This woman will serve for the remainder of her life, we hope (with good health) she will stay in her new position for a minimum of 4 decades. This will lead to America having 4 liberal justices serving as opposed to only 3. Ketanji received 53 Yay’s and 47 Nay’s after being nominated to serve as a Supreme Court justice. She won by only 6 votes (including 3 republican votes). Nonetheless she did win, and her nomination changes the outlook on equality in the America and gives a small glimpse into what is possible for any young black woman to achieve.
